The city lives on two languages and one industry. Watchmaking has shaped it for over a century, and several of the best-known Swiss brands still have their headquarters here, which brings engineers, designers and apprentices from across the country. The French-speaking community is large enough to have its own schools, theatres and cafés, and the German-speaking majority lives alongside it rather than apart. For a single person, that means a mixed population that is used to meeting people who do not share its first language.
The app is built for that reality. Members list the languages they speak, intentions are shown on every profile, and the interface itself can be set to French, German or English. The community is French-speaking and covers the Bernese Jura, from Saint-Imier to Tavannes and Tramelan, as well as Biel/Bienne and the lakeside villages. Profiles are ranked by distance, so you see the city first, then Nidau and the lake, then the Jura valleys above.
The setting does the rest. The old town, with its cobbled streets and painted fountains, is compact and good for a first coffee. The lakefront and the Strandboden park are a short walk from the station, and in summer the boat to St Peter's Island, where Rousseau spent what he called the happiest weeks of his life, is a half-day excursion with a walk and a terrace at the end. The vineyards of the north shore, around Twann and Ligerz, are a different option: a walk between the vines and a glass of wine in a village cellar.
Biel/Bienne also connects well. Neuchâtel is twenty minutes away by train, Bern about thirty, and Solothurn a quarter of an hour. The funicular up to Magglingen offers a view over the lake and the Seeland in a few minutes. Widen the search radius and Neuchâtel and the Littoral come into range, which more than doubles the French-speaking pool.
